Magmatic sill formation during dike opening

نویسندگان

چکیده

The origin of horizontal magma-filled sills is disputed, particularly for extensional settings where the opening vertical dikes predicted mode magma intrusion. We simulate long-term extension followed by short-term dike in a two-dimensional viscoelastic medium representing plate spreading center. show that extensionally stressed lithosphere can reduce sublithospheric stresses enough sill given three conditions: (1) Maxwell time asthenosphere <5× interval between episodes; (2) average density not much greater than density; and (3) depth an axial valley smaller few hundred meters. This mechanism explains presence along axis faster-spreading ridges their absence slower-spreading centers thick dense and/or sizeable valleys exist.

Volcanology. A large magmatic sill complex beneath the Toba caldera.

An understanding of the formation of large magmatic reservoirs is a key issue for the evaluation of possible strong volcanic eruptions in the future. We estimated the size and level of maturity of one of the largest volcanic reservoirs, based on radial seismic anisotropy. We used ambient-noise seismic tomography below the Toba caldera (in northern Sumatra) to observe the anisotropy that we inte...

Virtual Dike: multiscale simulation of dike stability

We present a Virtual Dike simulation module developed as a part of a flood Early Warning System (EWS) for the UrbanFlood project. The UrbanFlood EWS is a distributed system that analyzes sensor data received in real-time from flood defenses (dikes, dams, etc.) and simulates dike stability, breaching and flood propagation. The aim of the Virtual Dike module is to develop an advanced multiscale m...

Lunar Regional Pyroclastic Deposits: Evidence for Eruption from Dikes Emplaced into the Near-surface Crust

Introduction: Lunar pyroclastic deposits can be subdivided into several modes of occurrence [1], suggesting different modes of emplacement. For example, some smaller pyroclastic deposits have been interpreted to have erupted during strombolian/hawaiian activity [2], while others are linked to vulcanian activity related to dike and sill emplacement below crater floors [3,4]. The largest pyroclas...

Eruption of magmatic foams on the Moon: Formation in the waning stages of dike emplacement events as an explanation of “irregular mare patches”

Article history: Received 23 September 2016 Received in revised form 31 January 2017 Accepted 7 February 2017 Available online 9 February 2017 Volcanic eruptions on theMoon take place in conditions of low gravity and negligible atmospheric pressure, very different from those on Earth. These differences lead to characteristic lunar versions of hawaiian and strombolian explosive activity, and to ...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
